Back to all makers

Darryl Spencer is bright and accurate in his movement and does everything fast. He is a prolific mark maker, whether spontaneously with his finger – in a pool of spilt tea – or painting in the studio.

Being in the studio is an exercise in compromise and negotiation, and at times Darryl can find the space busy and unpredictable. He is very sensitive to his environment and to noise and can be overwhelmed by anxiety. Generally, he feels confident in the Studio, the set-up of which is crucial for his success. It has to be practical, with a clear focus on materials and equipment to support choice. He needs a refuge point – through the arrangement of furniture – and clear exits around his work.

Darryl likes to work on a large scale using paint and making marks in a repetitive movement. He has been developing his interaction with other people in the studio, particularly working with Sam – negotiating the sharing of processes and equipment. Even something as simple as asking him to pass a paintbrush can be a daunting test of nerve.

Darryl also collaborates with Project Art Works on a series of ‘surveys’ of different buildings and spaces that are filmed and exhibited.
