Sam Smith

Back to all makers

Since a child Sam has been passionate about emptying stuff.  Outage by squeezing and pouring.  Bathrooms could be emptied of products and pastes. Fast.

On record in one of his earliest sessions at Project Art Works. Sam can be seen squeezing acrylic orange paint into a tub. Today Sam engages with a wide range of different materials and processes. However his squeeze paintings remain his signature work. In the studio Sam sits by a large window and a propped canvas (large). Sometimes choosing colours (considerate). Sometimes taking colours (impulsive). Often with all consuming, shuddering tension.

Sam forcefully expels colour from the paint pot. He watches the paint slide into the tray, before abruptly discarding the pot and the moment. He then returns to his chair and internal preoccupations before the next move grabs him.
