Co-founder and director of Project Art Works, Kate Adams, presents Area of Longing at the Blackshed Gallery, Robertsbridge.

Kate Adams is a visual artist; her practice is interdisciplinary encompassing, video, installation, construction and drawing. This exhibition presents works that span a decade – 2006 and 2016. It includes drawings, assemblage and film and is the result of a recent period of time spent in the studio pulling fragments of experience, reflections and objects together to form an installation.

The title was found. A tiny scrap of paper cut to the size and shape of three typed words – area of longing.

Selected works include:

Sphere drawings (a series of 7 drawings 560 x 810mms)

In 2004 and 2012 we witnessed a transit of Venus across the Sun. These take place when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and a superior planet, becoming visible against the solar disk. They occur in a pattern that generally repeats every 243 years, with pairs of transits eight years apart. A Venus transept is a significant event one that is inexorable and indifferent. The macro scale of such happenings against a background of human chaos are a point of reference in Adams’ work for the cycles of living and dying that impact on us all. Macro and micro events in time and space, movement and stillness, light and dark, inside and outside, surface and substance.

Si’s holy tree (a hanging tree in the gallery 4.5 x 2.5 metres)

This installation can be experienced as a 3 dimensional drawing. The ‘bones’ of trees are only visible in winter (if deciduous) or when a tree has died and either remains standing, holding its grip on the earth or when cut or fallen bringing its root system with it. The Holly tree was to be cut down but instead was pulled from the ground and then brought to the studio where it was laid out and systematically stripped of leaves, berries, and bark. It floats here defying its weight and gravity.
