Understanding Stress and Anxiety in Autism
Monday 26th February (part 1) & Tuesday 27th (part 2) February 2024: 9.30am – 1pm.

Stress and anxiety affect many autistic children and adults, causing significant distress that may be expressed in ways that challenge the person and others who struggle to understand them.
This course looks at how you can help autistic children and adults to reduce stress and anxiety, how to understand their behaviour, and how to support them during difficult times.
Course content
- Introduction to autism
- Stress and anxiety in autism
- Terminology and definitions of ‘behaviour’
- Understanding stress and anxiety using SPELL
- Proactive strategies for support Outcomes
- Describe current thinking about autism
- Discuss causes of stress and anxiety for autistic people
- Identify different definitions of ‘behaviour’
- Apply skills in understanding anxiety and behaviour using the SPELL framework
- Describe and implement changes to environment and practice to support autistic people proactively and during difficult times
This training is for family carers and support workers supporting adults (18 years +) through a Personal Budget from Adult Social Care or an Education, Health, and Care Plan. There are limited places available for people funded through Personal Health Budgets, or people who support someone aged under 18 please contact [email protected] for availability.
