In collaboration with Jerwood Gallery, The Boat Project and Hastings Borough Council – Project Art Works presented Boat – a newly commissioned work that recorded a poetic and intimate insight into the qualities of Collective Spirit (Lone Twin boat) as vessel and object.
In May 2012, our Tuesday Studio group travelled to Itchenor Harbour to record a trip soon after the boat’s launch. The investigation of Collective Spirit and the experience of sailing on it by people who have perceptual and/or cognitive impairments is being presented as multi-media production at the Jerwood Gallery during the boat’s visit to Hastings over the weekend of the 7th and 8th July.
The production is part of an on-going strand of inquiry which involves facilitating collaborative investigations of built space and their emotional, physical and perceptual impact on different people.
The Boat Project is part of Artists Taking the Lead, a series of 12 public art commissions across the UK to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The Boat Project is the winning commission for the South East region. It uses the latest yacht building methods to turn donated wooden objects into a seaworthy archive of stories and memories.
