GALLERY, PROJECT SPACE & ONLINE PLATFORM.

Renovations will shortly begin at 12 Claremont in central Hastings, working towards an inclusive gallery and platform to showcase art from the extensive archive of works by neurodivergent artists and makers and creative practitioners from across the UK and beyond.

The Project Art Works Untitled Gallery is a place of art, aspiration, community action and creative practice.

Untitled gallery will showcase exceptional art through an ongoing programme of exhibitions and installations by local/national/international neurodivergent artists including new commissions, digital and physical access to a unique archive of artwork, sales and the licensing and loan of artworks; and a pulse of regular inclusive community events including forums for caregivers and workers, performance events, awareness raising, supported employment and training for volunteers.

Within the studio images evolve through a process of action and reflection but rarely do artists or makers identify intent or content. A large proportion of the works in the archive are labelled ‘Untitled’ – an appropriate and authentic name for our gallery.

The gallery is a partnership initiative between Heart of Hastings Community Land Trust and Project Art Works. The gallery is housed on the ground floor of 12 Claremont, a building in need of regeneration and repair within the Trinity Triangle area of Hastings Town centre.

To realise this “explicitly inclusive, culturally and economically productive, perpetually affordable neighbourhood hub, the two organisations, and the many individuals within them, are working together to learn and share each other’s worlds, to challenge ourselves and support each other” in the development of the whole building. This will include live-work spaces for creatives, inclusive artist studios, a project space in the basement as well as the gallery and event space at street level.

Above all it is a place where, through visibility and presence people, who may experience different degrees of marginalisation, will be central to the civic and cultural life of their community.

Exhibitions

Prior to opening, Project Art Works will showcase painting, drawing and installation through a series of window exhibitions.

Untitled ROUND2 presents a series of framed works on paper by neurodivergent artists who as a collective have attended Project Art Works in-house studio programme. The eleven works selected for exhibition in the gallery window offer an understated insight into the diverse approaches to making in the studio.

Untitled ROUND2 continues online on the gallery website, here. A selection of framed and unframed works on paper are available to purchase in the shop.
