Sam Smith’s paintings first came to public attention through their inclusion in the exhibition ‘In the Realm of Others’ at the De la Warr Pavilion in 2015. Building on his developing profile as an artist, Project Art Works are delighted to announce Smith’s first solo exhibition consisting of new paintings for blackSHed Gallery . The exhibition will open 2nd April 2016 and run until the 14th May 2016.
In collaboration with Project Art Works, Smith has developed an approach to making that reveals his energy and perhaps conveys the mystery and dynamism of his personality. His signature works are vast canvases capturing moments of intense action. This pure physical interaction with materials has transformed from a curiosity for emptying out pastes and cleaning products into a meaningful creative process. The moments of energetically squeezing colour are, for Smith, where the art seems to exist. For the exhibition Project Art Works will construct 27 interlocking frames that create a single 2.5m square support, which will be presented to Smith to work on as a single image. At a given point the supports will be separated out so that Smith can work on them individually. The structure is designed to capture the range of Smith’s mark making from pouring to drawing.
The exhibition is made possible by the kind support of the Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts.
Exhibition: 2nd April – 14th May 2016, blackShed Gallery, Robertsbridge.
