Carl Sexton’s art work has been selected for Black Joy! Up Close and Personal at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, coordinated by Playing the Race Card and curated by Lorna Hamilton-Brown RCA MBE.

Carl Sexton has an established painting practice, working on multiple scales using paint pens, brushes and sponges to build images from dense clusters of marks. He embraces pattern, colour and physicality in process and in finished works.
With joyous intensity, Carl makes works that bring people together and stimulate conversations, with and without words. In this way, Carl’s identity – which although unknown is expressed through his practice and its outputs – can bridge ethnic and neuro-cultures to create opportunities for understanding, healing and celebration.
Carl’s work has featured in exhibitions including Turner Prize 2021 Exhibition (Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, 2021) and Residential (Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, 2024), and as part of documenta fifteen (2022). In 2019, Carl and his mother, Doreen, featured in I Hear You, a moving image installation by Mikhail Karikis, exploring non-verbal communication as a political agent (De La Warr Pavilion, 2019). In 2023, Carl’s family were featured in the film KIN, directed by Tim Corrigan and Esther Springett.
